Some friends and I are pulling together a panel for a conference on writing centers, and are wondering what kinds of stuff tutors would like to hear about, hot topics in writing center pedagogy... we can't think of anything beyond obvious topics and would love to have some input from the larger WC community.

Perhaps the obvious is what people want to learn about...

The biggest things that seem to come up over and over:

1. How to effectively work with ESL students while still keeping a student-focused philosophy and not doing too much direct teaching (should the rules be different for working with ESl students?)

2. How to work with students who really only want grammatical help without becoming "editors"

3. How to guide tutors (who often have a background in mostly or only expository and creative writing) to help students with technical/professional and journalism writing

4. Working with resistant students or students in emotional crisis

5. The "go to the writing center because you have bad grammar" professors (who often even write that on student papers!) ... ie. when professors don't understand the point of the writing center or have different expectations of what students will get from what the center provides

I would say go with your strengths - where do your panelist's interests/strengths overlap a bit?

I would second the above suggestions, and will attempt to offer a few more.

Are you all from the same WC? Or different ones? How a WC is situated within the campus community could be interesting, or how campus size affects the WC.

Something I am interested in is race and gender within the WC. What is the make-up of your own WC, how does that affect things (will a white male dominated WC look appealing or intimidating to minority students?). What about within the tutorial - can/do tutors use racial or gender-based privilege to bolster their authority? How do they combat that?
