I'm currently working on a training package for future writing tutors in my school. The section I'm working on right now is for ESL students. In your tutoring, what would you say are recurring issues you have with ESL students in particular? Are there situations you find yourself in with ESL students that are unique to them? In terms of grammar, what cultural patterns have you noticed among ESL students? I've already included information on cultural thought patterns, plagiarism, and wording and phrasing concerns. Any other ideas? Any responses and feedback would be appreciated :D

I found that one big help for ESL students has been telling them that they are not alone in their frustration with grammar; native speakers have trouble, too! You've probably already found in your reading that students from certain areas of the world have different grammatical patterns; with anyone from China, Japan, Thailand, Korea, etc. subject verb agreement and pronouns tend to crop up, as the language that they use has characters that already express these thoughts. Go to Purdue's Online Writing Lab (found via Google is fine) to look at back issues of the Writing Lab Newsletter, which includes many articles on working with ESL students. Don't know if it's searchable, but worth browsing for other articles as well.

The errors I see most with ESL Students: incomplete sentences, improper use of MLA/ plagiarism (such as making changes in a quote or borrowing language too much), mistakes with articles (the/a), verb tense.

Native speakers of Spanish have particular troubles with prepositions. In/on, at/to, with/by...you get the idea.
